DANVILLE, Va. — Averett University softball swept a home doubleheader against Brevard College on Sunday, beating the Tornados 8-3 and 11-5 on Cougar Field.
Â
In the opener, Averett (5-9) jumped on Brevard (6-11) for three runs in the first inning, including one on an RBI single by freshman
Kadence Woodlief. Although the Tornados responded with two runs in the top of the second, Averett weathered the storm and tacked on three more runs to go up 6-2 on Woodlief's three-run double to center field.
Â
The Cougars added an RBI single by junior
Hannah Jones, then executed a double steal with runners on first and third to take an 8-2 advantage. Brevard scored one run in the sixth to get within five, but Averett shut the Tornados down the rest of the way to earn the win.
Sophomore
Hannah Zabik led the offense in Game 1 with a 3-for-4 effort at the plate with two runs scored, while Woodlief totaled two hits and four RBIs. Senior right-hander
Taylor Sullivan got the win in the circle, going four innings with six strikeouts.
Â
Averett improved to 7-0 all-time against Brevard with its win in Game 2 to finish off the doubleheader. The Cougars struck early to grab a 3-0 lead after one inning. Woodlief had an RBI double, junior
Grace Watlington smacked an RBI double and junior
Angela Rodriguez had a sacrifice fly.
Brevard didn't go away, however, as the Tornados stormed back to score five runs in the top of the third to take a 5-3 lead. Once again, the Cougars had an answer in the bottom half of the frame. A Watlington sac fly and RBI single by Rodriguez tied it, 5-5.
In the fourth, Rodriguez came through again with a three-run double to left-center to push Averett back in front 8-5. The Cougars then scored three more runs in the fifth to pull away.
Woodlief went 3-for-4 with three runs scored in Game 2, while freshmen
Mackenzie Newcomb, Zabik and Rodriguez each had two hits. Rodriguez totaled a team-high five RBIs.
Averett hosts N.C. Wesleyan University on Tuesday beginning at 2 p.m.
