WINCHESTER, Va. — Averett University baseball knocked off No. 2 Shenandoah University 9-5 in Game to earn a doubleheader split with the nationally ranked Hornets on Friday afternoon in Old Dominion Athletic Conference action. Shenandoah won the opening game 10-1.
In Game 2, Averett (5-17, 1-6 ODAC) shifted the momentum from Game 1 early on. In the second inning, junior
Gavin Colwell led off with a double down the right field line, and sophomore
Trevor Testerman laid down a bunt single to advance Colwell to third. Senior
Brandt Brophy capitalized with an RBI-double to score Colwell, and Testerman scored on an error by the catcher on the play, which also advanced Brophy to third to spark a six-run inning by the Cougars. Brophy eventually scored on a passed ball to give Averett a 3-0 advantage. The runs continued for the Cougars following RBI singles from graduate student
Nolan Maccabe and junior
Mason Williams. Williams later scored on a wild pitch to extend Averett's advantage to 7-0.
In the third inning, Testerman led off with a single to get on base for redshirt junior
Luke Harris, who swatted an RBI single up the middle to score Testerman. In the bottom half of the inning, the Hornets responded with two runs to cut the lead down to 7-2. In the fifth inning, Testerman clobbered a pitch over the left field fence to add a run to Averett's lead. In the seventh inning, Testerman poked a single into left field, Brophy followed-up with another single to put Testerman on third, and Harris singled down the right field line to extend the lead to 9-2. The Cougars gave up three runs in the bottom of the ninth, but managed to hold onto the lead for the big road win.
Testerman had an exceptional performance in Game 2, going 4-for-5 and accounting for four of Averett's runs.Â
Sophomore
Tim Schware earned the win, allowing just three earned runs on seven hits over eight innings on the mound.
In Game 1, Shenadoah (16-3, 6-2 ODAC) struck first early, taking a 2-0 lead in the first inning. The Hornets tacked on three additional runs in the sixth inning after a three-run home run. In the eighth inning, junior
Mason Williams belted a home run over the left field fence to get the Cougars on the board. The Hornets responded in the eighth, scoring five runs to lead Averett 10-1.
The Cougars are back in action on Tuesday when they host Ferrum College at 3:30 p.m.
