SWANNANOA, N.C. — Averett University women's lacrosse found its stride with a dominant 22-9 victory over Warren Wilson College on Saturday.
The Cougars won the day without much drama, securing their first victory of the season. For the first time on the young season, Averett (1-2) allowed its opponent to tally the game's first score, as Warren Wilson (1-3) took an early 1-0 advantage over the Cougars. From that point forward, the tide turned swiftly in Averett's favor.
After falling behind early, freshman
Ava Soucek netted the first goal for the Cougars at the 10:51 mark of the first quarter, with an assist coming courtesy of junior
Faith Bowlin. Soucek struck the back of the net once again for Averett, with 6:06 on the first quarter clock, to draw the visiting side ahead for the first time. The Owls answered back, before senior
Irenia Torre closed out quarter with a goal to put Averett ahead, 3-2.
A run of back-and-forth play opened the second frame, as the score leveled at 4-4 before, at long last,
Bowlin struck for the Cougars down a player, to bring the score to 5-4. This time Averett would not surrender its lead, as the Cougars began to open things up over the Owls. Another goal for Bowlin, followed by a pair of scores from freshmen
Gracie Kean and
Kait Cashman, sent the Averett into the halftime break ahead 9-5.
Cougars across the board combined to extend the lead in the third quarter, with eight goals spread across four players. The bulk of which came from the stick of Bowlin, who matched Warren Wilson's scoring output in the quarter with three goals of her own. An 8-3 advantage in the penultimate quarter all but locked up the victory for Averett, now holding a 17-8 advantage. The Cougars continued to pour it on in the fourth quarter, as five different Cougars logged a goal in the game's closing moments. The fantastic group scoring effort propelled Averett to its 11-goal win over the Owls.
Averett is back on the road for its next action, a rescheduled contest against Methodist University at 4 p.m. Tuesday.
