Softball loses two at Roanoke

TROUTVILLE, Va.— Averett University softball lost a pair of Old Dominion Athletic Conference games at Roanoke College on Wednesday night, falling 3-0 in Game 1 and 8-0 in five innings in the nightcap.

In the opener, Roanoke (15-7, 7-1 ODAC) broke a scoreless tie in the third inning with a sacrifice fly. The Maroons added another run in that frame on an RBI single to up their lead to 2-0. Roanoke added another insurance run in the fifth to take a 3-0 advantage.

Averett (11-17, 5-7 ODAC) was limited to two hits in the opener — singles by juniors Grace Watlington and Angela Rodriguez.

In Game 2, Roanoke again took advantage of a sacrifice fly to plate its first run in the third inning, then followed with an RBI groundout to take a 2-0 lead. The Maroons pulled away by tacking on a two-run double in the fourth to push their lead to 4-0, then they added a two-run double and an RBI single in the fifth to make it 7-0. Roanoke's RBI single later that inning gave the Maroons the needed eight-run margin to end the game early.

Averett's three hits in Game 2 were by sophomore Hannah Zabik and freshman Mackenzie Newcomb and Molly George.

Averett hosts Randolph College on Saturday in ODAC action for Senior Day.
