CONYERS, Ga. — Averett University men's golf freshman
John Keba's par on the final hole helped him edge Emory University's Michael Burry by one stroke to lift Keba to his first individual win Sunday at Emory's Spring Invitational by Discover Dekalb.
Keba shot a 1-under-par 71 during the final round to finish at 5-over for the 54-hole tournament, one stroke ahead of Burry and Washington and Lee University's Jonathan McEwen. With McEwen already in the clubhouse, Keba and Burry were head-to-head in the same playing group and both were tied at 5-under entering the 18th hole. Keba sunk his par putt while Burry bogeyed the hole to give Keba his first collegiate medalist honors.
Keba is the third different Averett golfer to win an event this year.
As a team, No. 19/20 Averett finished third with a collective 48-over 912 over three rounds. No. 2 Emory and No. 7/8 Washington and Lee both finished tied for the top team score at 36-over on the par-72 course, with Emory winning the tiebreaker by scorecard with its fifth golfer.
In addition to Keba, Averett had two finish in the top 11 as junior
Killian O'Reilly and freshman
Johnny Stewart both tied for 11th at 13-over. Graduate student
Caleb Kimbrough finished tied for 27th at 19-over, while sophomore
Miguel Rodriguez Lamana ended the tournament at 29-over and junior
Hunter Crute was at 32-over. Sophomore
Alexander Vidmo, playing as an individual, finished at 36-over.
Keba began the final day in fifth place after going 6-over through Saturday's first 36 holes. However, he saved his best round for last, shooting a 71 on the final day. He was the only golfer in the field to shoot below par during the final round.
The individual win and solid team performance gives Averett momentum entering the Old Dominion Athletic Conference Championships next week.
