DANVILLE, Va. — Averett University baseball resumed its game against Ferrum College from March 26, losing 12-2 and fell 12-11 in its second game on Wednesday afternoon.
Due to inclement weather, Averett (8-27, 4-16 ODAC) had to hault play against Ferrum (16-21, 7-13 ODAC) going into the bottom of the eighth inning on March 26 and pickup play prior to its regularly schedeuled game on Wednesday. Freshman
Drew Skinner led off with a single up the middle. Junior
Kevin Zischke was hit by pitch to send Skinner to second. A groundout by sophomore
Trevor Testerman put the runners on second and third. Senior
Brandt Brophy swatted a two-RBI-single through the right side to make the score 7-2. In the ninth, Ferrum added five runs to extend its lead.
In the second game, Averett took the lead first. Junior
Preston Robbins led off with a single up the middle in the second inning. Testerman reached on a fielder's choice that got Robbins out at second. Testerman eventually made it around to third on a stolen base followed by a passed ball. Skinner hit into a fielder's choice, which got Testerman out at home. Freshman
Jack Turner poked a single to second base and Skinner went around to score on a throwing error from the second baseman. Ferrum managed to put three runs on the board in the fourth inning to take the lead.
Skinner led off the fifth with a single hit to the shortstop. Turner hit into a fielder's choice that got Skinner out at second. Turner advanced to second on a wild pitch. Turner got to third after Brophy flied out center field. Freshman
Tyler Lowe was walked. Zischke slapped a single up the middle to score Turner and send Lowe to second. Lowe went around to score off of a fielding error to tie the game up 3-3. Ferrum took a one-run-lead in the bottom of the fifth. In the top of the sixth, Testerman hit a single into left field and reached third on a throwing error by the left fielder. Testerman was scored off of a sacrifice fly hit by Skinner to tie the game back up.
The changed hands in the bottom of the sixth after Ferrum scored a run. In the top of the seventh, Brophy reached on a fielding error and later stole second. Lowe singled through the left side to put runners on the corners. Zischke was hit by pitch to load the bases. Junior
Mason Williams hit into a fielder's choice that got Zischke out at second, but it did score Brophy on the play to make the score 5-5. In the seventh, Ferrum tacked on two runs.
In the top of the eighth, Robbins led off with a single through the left side. Testerman swatted a single into right field to put runners on first and second. Skinner was hit by pitch to load the bases. Turner hit a two-RBI-single into right center field to score Testerman and Robbins. Brophy hit a single to the shortstop to load the bases up again. Lowe was hit by pitch to score a run to take an 8-7 lead. Zischke grounded into a double play, was able to score the runner from third. Williams poked a single into right center field to score Brophy.Â
Ferrum took the lead in the bottom of the eighth. In the top of the ninth, Robbins was hit by pitch. Freshman
Maddox Jordan came in to pinch run for Robbins. Testerman laid down a sacrifice bunt to advance Jordan to second. Jordan made his way to third after a wild pitch and then scored on a sacrifice fly hit by Skinner to tie the game. Averett gave up a walk-off RBI-single in the top of the ninth to end the game.
The Cougars are back in action on Saturday for a doubleheader against Eastern Mennonite University on the road beginning at noon.
