Box Score GREENSBORO, N.C. — Averett University baseball fell to Guilford College 10-8 on Wednesday afternoon.
Averett (6-19, 2-8 ODAC) was down 4-0 in the second inning up until sophomore
Trevor Testerman belted a solo homerun over the fence in center field.
Guilford (11-16, 4-7 ODAC) took advantages of some defensive struggles early on in the first inning. A couple of hits paired with three walks and an error allowed the Quakers to lead 4-0. The Quakers gave the Cougars some headaches in the bottom-half of the inning. Sophomore
Michael Pellegrino was the starter for Averett, but he was relieved by junior
Cole McLain with two outs in the second after allowing two runs to score. McLain was able to get the Cougars out of the inning after inheriting a run to extend the Guilford lead to 7-1. Â
In the third inning, Averett managed to put a dent in the defecit. Junior
Kevin Zischke singled to right field with two outs. He later advanced to second on a wild pitch. Freshman
Drew Skinner and junior
Gavin Colwell were both walked to load the bases. Junior
Preston Robbins poked a single into center field to send Zischke and Skinner home. Testerman Followed up with an RBI-single to score Colwell home from third to make the score 7-4. In the top of the fourth, freshman
Tyler Lowe was hit by pitch to lead off. Redshirt junior
Luke Harris hit a single up the middle to put Lowe on second. Both runners advanced a base after a wild pitch. Lowe scored on a sacrifice fly off of the bat of Zischke to put the Cougars within two runs of the Quakers.
Graduate Student
Nolan Maccabe led off with a triple into right field. Skinner grounded out to third to score Maccabe and bring the Cougars within one run of Guilford. In the eighth, the Quakers answered back with a two-run blast and tacked on one additional run to lead 10-6. The Cougars made a run in the top of the ninth. Testerman led off with a double down the left field line. Lowe sent Testerman to third on a single into center field. Freshman
Maddox Jordan smoked a two-RBI triple into center to score Testerman and Lowe to make the score 10-8.
Testerman was hot all game long. He went 4-for-5 in the contest with a homerun, a double and two RBIs.Â
The Cougars are back in action on Saturday when they host Virginia Wesleyan in a conference doubleheader scheduled to begin at noon.
