DANVILLE, Va. —
Erin Murphy announced her resignation as head coach of the Averett University women's lacrosse program on Tuesday to pursue another coaching opportunity.
Averett will begin an immediate search for its next head coach.
In two seasons as head coach of the Cougars, Averett went 13-15 overall with a 6-10 mark in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference while producing two all-conference selections, two all-state selections and multiple academic accolades. Prior to taking over as head coach of Averett's program, Murphy was an assistant with the program for four seasons.
"We'd like to thank Erin for her guidance and continued development of our women's lacrosse program as both an assistant coach and head coach since our program was restarted in 2018," said Danny Miller, interim director of athletics. "She helped our program accomplish some great achievements, and we wish her the best in her future endeavors."
A native of Mooresville, North Carolina, Murphy earned her master's degree in business administration from Averett in 2019 while serving as an assistant coach. She said Averett will always remain special to her as a place where she began her collegiate coaching career.
"My time at Averett includes years and experiences that I will cherish forever," Murphy said. "I'd like to thank Meg Stevens, the athletics administration and President Dr. Tiffany Franks for their continued support. Over the past seven years serving in both assistant coach and head coach roles, we've made historical strides — from competing in the USA South championship game as a second-year program to our ODAC Tournament appearance in the first year entering the prestigious conference. I've had the opportunity to coach incredible players breaking national, conference and school records, as well as records in the classroom with this year's team having the highest GPA in program history. None of these accomplishments would have been possible without their commitment to Averett and Averett University's commitment to them. I'm very grateful for the players I've coached and the wonderful people I've met. I know the accomplishments will continue in years to come."
