Potter leaving Averett as director of golf

DANVILLE, Va. — Averett University announced that Ben Potter has resigned as director of golf to pursue another coaching opportunity.

Averett will begin an immediate search for its next director of golf.

"The last five years have been one of the greatest honors of my life," Potter said. "Having the opportunity to coach at my alma mater has meant the world to me and my family. I would like to thank Dr. Tiffany Franks and Danny Miller for taking a chance on 22-year-old college graduate. This is a very bitter sweet moment for me, but I'm excited to watch the process and success of this program now as an alum. In many ways, this place will always be a home to me."

Potter '19/'21 took over the coaching duties of the men's program in May 2019, and in December 2020 he was named Averett's Director of Golf with the announcement of the addition of the women's golf program. He's led both teams since fall 2021.

"We'd like to thank Ben for his role in returning our men's program to the top 25 and helping build our women's program in its first three years of existence," said Danny Miller, interim director of athletics. "We wish him the best in his future endeavors."

On the men's side, Potter has returned the Cougars to national prominence with national rankings and major national awards in his first five seasons while building a strong foundation with the start of the women's golf program at Averett. Potter coached two Division III Phil Mickelson Outstanding Freshman Award recipients and three All-America selections on the men's team while also guiding the Cougars to the 2022-23 NCAA Championships.

In his first three seasons guiding the Averett women's golf program, Potter continued to build a talented roster filled with potential. He produced multiple all-conference selections and was named the 2023-24 Old Dominion Athletic Conference Coach of the Year for women's golf.

Potter played his final two seasons of collegiate golf at Averett before being named head coach.
