Women's Volleyball defeats Southern Virginia to open Day 2 of Washington & Lee Invitational; falls to St. Mary's in Game 2

LEXINGTON, Va. — Averett University women's volleyball secured a 3-1 victory over Southern Virginia University at the Washington & Lee University Invitational on Saturday, improving to 2-4 on the season. Averett took the first set convincingly, 25-15, but Southern Virginia responded with a 25-23 win in the second set. Averett then regained control, winning the third set 25-17 and closing out the match with a 25-21 victory in the fourth.

Sophomore Hope Parrish led Averett with 10 kills, while sophomore Kadence Woodlief and sophomore Sydney Mounce each added 9 kills. Fifth year libero Erin Gray anchored the defense with 37 digs, and fifth year Destiny McIntosh contributed 7 kills and 2 blocks. Southern Virginia, now 1-5, was paced by Brenna Clyde's 13 kills, but struggled offensively with a team hitting percentage of just .090.

Averett (2-5, 0-0 ODAC) fell to St. Mary's College of Maryland (3-3, 0-0 United East) in game 2 of the Washington & Lee University Invitational. Despite a strong start and a resilient effort, the Cougars were edged out with set scores of 25-16, 16-25, 13-25, 25-18, and 9-15.

Averett battled back in the fourth set, fueled by standout performances from junior Rachel Green and fifth year Destiny McIntosh. Green tallied seven kills with a .385 hitting percentage, while McIntosh contributed nine kills and played a key role at the net with one solo block. Setter Kinsley Stevens orchestrated the offense with 15 assists, helping the Cougars extend the match to a decisive fifth set.

In the final set, Averett couldn't sustain their momentum as St. Mary's pulled away with a strong .292 hitting percentage compared to Averett's .050. Despite their efforts, the Cougars struggled with consistency and committed critical errors that St. Mary's capitalized on, sealing the win with a 15-9 score in the fifth set.

Averett will be back in action Sept. 13 when they travel to Mt. Berry, Ga. to attend the Berry College Invitational.
