Hot start helps men’s basketball roll past Shenandoah

DANVILLE, Va. — A hot-shooting first half helped Averett University men's basketball roll to an 85-60 home win over Shenandoah University on Wednesday night in Old Dominion Athletic Conference play at the Grant Center.

Averett (6-8, 2-4 ODAC) opened the game on a tear, shooting 64.6 percent from the floor and going 6-for-9 from beyond the arc to set the tone over the first 20 minutes of the game. The Cougars quickly distanced themselves from Shenandoah (6-10, 1-6 ODAC) in the first seven minutes. Freshman Jackson Sellars scored 15 of his team-high 20 points in the first half, while redshirt freshman Timayahs Bracey drained three 3-pointers in the first period as he scored 11 of his career-high 19 points before the break. Averett scored a season-high 51 first-half points as it took a 51-32 advantage into the locker rooms.

Although Averett's offense only cooled slightly in the second half, the Cougars maintained at least a 19-point cushion for the rest of the game and grew their lead to as many as 27 points when a pair of free throws by sophomore Terrell Fitzgerald put Averett ahead 76-49 with 5:41 to play.

Sophomore Jamison Graves added 15 points and three assists for the Cougars, who also got nine points and seven rebounds from graduate Jason Sellars II. In addition to his team-high 20 points, Jackson Sellars made a team-high four steals and sophomore Josh Lewis finished with five boards. Freshman Mason Mitchell dished out a career-best five assists as well for the Cougars, who finished the game shooting 49.2 percent overall and 42.9 percent from 3-point range while matching a season-high of nine made 3-pointers.

The Cougars, who have won two in a row, travel to Bridgewater College on Saturday.
