Track & field wraps up first day of competition at VMI Invitational

LEXINGTON, Va. – Averett University track and field attended the Virginia Military Institute Invitational, kicking competition off Friday afternoon.

Distance runners kicked off the day's action on track, as Averett's team of senior Jaden Carter, sophomores Ke'Vannio Smith and Azael Quintero, and freshman Hunter Moss combined for a time of 9:14.01 and an eighth-place finish.

Sprinters from both teams took to the track next, with the men's 60m first up. Fifth year Nick Andrews was Averett's fastest representative, leading the way with a 7.37 second dash, finishing in 59th overall. Sophomore Hailey Juhasz finished as the highest placing member of Averett's women's team. Juhasz placed 54th overall, posting a time of 8.33.

In Friday's field events junior Chris Nelson represented the Cougars in the men's long jump. Nelson posted a distance of 5.73m to place 39th.

Averett returns to action for Day 2 of VMI's invitational, with action set to kick off at 9 a.m. Saturday.
