Men's hoops falls to No. 8 Hampden-Sydney

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va.— Averett University men's basketball lost 88-64 to No. 8 Hampden-Sydney College on Wednesday night in Old Dominion Athletic Conference play.

Hampden-Sydney (16-3, 9-1 ODAC) began distancing itself with success from beyond the arc. The nationally ranked Tigers drained eight 3-pointers in the first half, including five in the first nine minutes of the game as Hampden-Sydney raced out to a 25-9 advantage midway through the first period.

Down 54-23 at the half, Averett (8-10, 3-7 ODAC) couldn't overcome the large deficit as Hampden-Sydney shot 63.6 percent from the field for the game while also finishing with 11 3-pointers total. Averett, however, did outscore the Tigers — last season's NCAA Division III national runner-up — 41-34 in the second period.

Sophomore Jamison Graves led four Cougars in double-digit scoring with 16 points. Freshman Jackson Sellars had 13 points, freshman Mason Mitchell scored 11 points and sophomore Isaiah Ramazani totaled 10 points for Averett. Sellars and Mitchell also led Averett with five rebounds apiece.

Averett returns home on Saturday to host Guilford College at 4:30 p.m.
