WINCHESTER, Va. — Averett University football fell 48-3 in a tough conference road matchup at Shenandoah University on Saturday.
Shenandoah (6-1, 4-1 ODAC) scored a touchdown in the opening minutes on its way to building a 20-0 advantage. Averett's lone score came on freshman
Michael Markulic's 27-yard field goal just before the end of the second quarter to cut the deficit to 20-3. Markulic improved to 2-for-2 this season on field goal attempts with the make.
The Hornets tacked on four touchdowns in the second half to pull away while keeping Averett (0-7, 0-5 ODAC) out of the end zone.
Redshirt sophomore quarterback
Ethan Ross returned after missing last week's game to go 22-for-25 for 136 yards passing. Eight different receivers had at least three catches for the Cougars.
Defensively, freshman linebacker
Bo Blankenship led Averett with nine tackles while freshman linebacker
Kent Ray had seven tackles.
Averett, which has played a top-three ODAC team for the third consectutive week, returns home to face Washington and Lee University on Nov. 1 at 4 p.m.
