Poor weather conditions force final round of O'Briant-Jensen Memorial to be canceled

GREENSBORO, N.C. — Tuesday's scheduled final round of the O'Briant-Jensen Memorial was canceled due to unplayable conditions as heavy rain continued to hit the region for the second consecutive day. The scores from Monday's opening round will count as the final results for the tournament.

Averett University men's golf tied for 14th following Monday's opening round of Guilford College's O'Briant-Jensen Memorial hosted at The Cardinal by Pete Dye. The Cougars shot a collective 33-over-par as the field battled rainy conditions on the par-71, 6,866-yard course.

The Cougars, ranked No. 49 in the Scoreboard rankings, were among the final pairings to tee off on Monday morning. Although Averett was near the top of the team standings early on, the Cougars ran into the soggy conditions and cooler temperatures as rain moved into the area as the round progressed.

Sophomore Benjamin Afzelius led the Averett participants, who all played within three strokes of each other. Afzelius finished 42nd individually after shooting a 7-over 78. Freshman Chase Myers was one shot back at 8-over, while sophomore Alexander Wirenlind and senior Miguel Rodriguez Lamana each shot 9-over. Freshman Lukas Newton finished the round at 10-over.

No. 1 Huntingdon College won the tournament with a score of 11-over, seven strokes ahead of 10th-ranked Methodist University in a field that featured 12 of the top 50 teams. North Carolina Wesleyan University's Juan Amil was the lone golfer to finish with an even-par 71 to put him in first place individually, which ultimately held up as the winning score following the cancelation of the last round.
