DANVILLE, Va. – Averett University men's lacrosse opened up ODAC action with a 30-5 loss to visitors Roanoke College, receiving votes in the USILA national polls, on Saturday afternoon at Daly Field.
Roanoke (3-0, 1-0 ODAC) shut out Averett (1-2, 0-1 ODAC) 14-0 through the first 15 minutes, but battled through the stiff Maroon defense to get on the board in the second period, with goals from
Tigran Ceesay and Cougar leading scorer
Emmett Wood. Six more netters from the visitors made the score 20-2 at the game's intermission.
Averett had its most productive period in the third, with a trifecta of scores from the likes of faceoff specialist
Zac Coleman, Wood, and
Zachary Hulbert. The Maroons marched on, however, scoring 10 goals over the last two periods to make the final score 30-5.
Wood, for the third game this season, led Averett in total goals with two on the afternoon. The aforementioned Coleman netted his first of 2025. Five Cougars tied for the lead in ground balls with two. Defender
Connor Boyd tallied a turnover.
Averett plays its fourth straight home game of the early season next on Wednesday, Feb. 26, hosting Randolph-Macon College for a 4 p.m. start time.
