ASHEBORO, N.C. – Averett University baseball dropped Sunday's series finale against Greensboro College to lose its first series of the season.
Averett (5-3) jumped out to an early lead in Sunday's standalone game, before ultimately succumbing to Greensboro's (5-2) relentless comeback efforts on the way to an 11-4 final score.
The Cougars' offense started the game off in full stride, just as they closed Saturday's second game. Sophomore
Drew Skinner got the fun going in the third inning. With teammates, senior's
Kevin Zischke and
Caden Grider on base, Skinner smacked a double to score the Cougars' first run. The third inning hit marked Skinner's third double and ninth RBI in just eight games played. Graduate student
Nolan Maccabe stepped up and delivered the Cougars' second consecutive double, a two-RBI knock to draw Averett ahead, 3-0. The Cougars were clearly seeing double in the top of the third, as senior
Preston Robbins hit Averett's third consecutive two-base knock to hang four runs on Greensboro in the inning.
Skinner paced Averett's lineup with three hits on Sunday. Maccabe and Robbins followed behind, as the duo each accounted for two hits of their own. A whole pack of Cougars added one hit to the tally, including Zischke, Grider, redshirt sophomore
Trevor Testerman, and sophomore
Tyler Lowe.
After Averett's early attack, Greensboro's junior pitcher Isaiah Faudoa found a groove. The Pride's started hurled eight innings, including five scoreless frames after Averett's four-run outburst in the third inning.
Southern Virginia University is next up on the schedule for Averett. The Cougars will travel to Buena Vista, Virginia, to take on the Knights for a quick two-game series. The first game of the doubleheader is set for Saturday at noon.
