DANVILLE, Va. – Averett University men's lacrosse utilized a dominant first period push to control momentum in its opening game versus Brevard College, winning 14-6 on Saturday afternoon at Daly Field.
Brevard (0-1) kicked off the game with two quick goals in less than five minutes, until Averett (1-0) scored five unanswered, featuring the first goal of the campaign from senior
Dawson Hobbs.
From then on, both defenses seemed to settle down, but Averett held the edge and tenacity through the second period. Goals from
Tigran Ceesay and newcomer
Zachary Hulbert pushed the Cougars farther ahead, with the home team leading 7-3 at halftime.
Ceesay entered hat-trick territory with two more in the third period, as Averett's offense cruised to an 11-4 lead. The Cougars forced six Tornado turnovers, and also led in the ground-ball margin, 9-6.
Brevard did bounce back solidly in the final 15 minutes, only trailing in the goals margin 3-2, but two scores from
Brayton Powers and a goal from
Dawson Hobbs wrapped up the convincing 14-6 win, marking the most goals scored in a game from the Cougars since Feb. 24 versus Warren Wilson.
Emmett Wood led the way for the Cougars with seven points, including a team-high five assists. Ceesay and Powers tied for the high in goals for Averett with three goals each.
Zac Coleman and
Connor Boyd did their part on ground balls, accounting for six each.
Goalie
Cameron Prutzman opened 2025 with six saves on the day. As a team, Averett shot 37 times, converted at a high rate with 24 of those being on goal. The Cougars led in ground balls 40-27, while causing seven more turnovers than Brevard, 13-6.
Averett returns to action at Daly Field under the lights on Saturday, Feb. 16, hosting William Peace University at 7 p.m.
