ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. — Averett University softball lost a pair of non-conference games to North Carolina Wesleyan University on Saturday, falling 5-3 and 12-3 in five innings.
In Game 1, N.C. Wesleyan (9-7) rolled out to a 5-0 lead in the first inning, getting three RBI singles to take a 3-0 advantage before adding a two-run single to finish the frame. The Cougars answered in the third inning with sophomore
Kadence Woodlief's RBI single and freshman
Brianna Brooks' sac fly.
Averett (8-8) inched closer in the top of the fifth when Woodlief smacked her first homer of the season to left field, getting Averett within 5-3.
The Cougars got the tying runs on in the top of the seventh, but couldn't knot the score as the Battling Bishops held on.
Averett jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning of Game 2 as sophomore
Mackenzie Newcomb crushed a two-run homer. However, N.C. Wesleyan matched the Cougars with two runs in the bottom half of the first, then put together back-to-back big innings. The Bishops scored three in the second and six in the third to go up 11-2, then added another insurance run in the fourth. Although junior
Hannah Zabik's sacrifice fly gave Averett a run in the top of the fifth, it wasn't enough.
Sophomore
Carson Bradsher had two hits in each game. Newcomb and Woodlief also had a multi-hit game in Game 1.
Averett travels to Sweet Briar College for a doubleheader on Tuesday.
