DANVILLE, Va. — Averett University men's volleyball fell to Carolina University at home on Wednesday.
Prior to the match, Averett celebrated senior
Anibal Lopez for Senior Night.
Averett (2-18) secured Set 1 with a score of 25-19 before Carolina (2-12) took the remaining three with scores of 25-22, 25-22 and 29-27.
The Cougars and Bruins were tied throughout the majority of Set 1 before a kill from freshman
Yerai Collazo put the Cougars on a four-point win streak leading them to their victory.
Averett recorded 14 kills as a team in Set 2 alone, staying within striking distance of Carolina, before they secured their first victory and drew even with the Cougars 1-1.
The Cougars carried their momentum into Set 3, staying neck and neck with the Bruins before taking off on a six point win streak. Errors on the Cougars gave the Bruins their second victory.
With the score 2-1, Averett took an early lead in an exhilarating fourth set. Carolina was able to pick up momentum in the middle of the set, coming back and securing their third and final victory of the night.
Sophomore
Finn Oakley led the Cougars' offense with 16 kills, while freshman
Liam Audrain trailed with nine. Junior
Diego Giffuni recorded 19 assists while fellow setter sophomore
Shaun Freeman had 15.
On defense for the Cougars, junior
Kendrick Sasu-Twumasi recorded four blocks while Lopez had 12 digs.
The Cougars travel to Virginia Beach, Virginia, for a non-conference match against Regent University at 6 p.m.
