LYNCHBURG, Va. — Averett University softball lost a heartbreaker 3-2 in extra innings before falling 2-0 in Game 2 in a pair of conference losses to Randolph College on Saturday.
In the opening game, Averett (10-10, 2-2 ODAC) trailed 1-0 after giving up an RBI double in the second inning. That lone run held up until the Cougars battled back to tie it, 1-1, in the top of the seventh on an RBI single to center by senior
Hannah Jones.
In extra innings, Averett inched ahead 2-1 on sophomore
Mackenzie Newcomb's RBI double. However, Randolph (3-15, 2-0 ODAC) countered with its own RBI double in the bottom of the eighth to tie it. The WildCats then won it with a walk-off run thanks to an error.
It was a tough loss for the Cougars, who out-hit Randolph 9-4. Newcomb, Jones and senior
Angela Rodriguez all had two hits. Junior
Hannah Zabik struck out four and allowed just one earned run in the circle.
Averett's offense was stymied in Game 2, finishing with just one hit — a fifth-inning single by sophomore
Ally Testerman. Randolph took a 1-0 lead in the third inning on an RBI single, then added an insurance run in the fourth with another RBI single.
Averett returns home with a non-conference doubleheader with Southern Virginia University on Tuesday.
