LYNCHBURG, Va. – Averett University track and field ran well in Day 2 action from Lynchburg's Dr. Jack M. Toms Alumni Invitational.
The Cougars entered into 11 different disciplines between the men's and women's teams on a busy Saturday of action in their season-opening meet.
The men's team saw veteran leadership pace the Cougars' entries. Senior
Nick Andrews finished best among Averett's entries in the men's 100m sprint. Andrews posted a time of 11.24s to place 22nd. Sophomore
Jamahrie Owens placed second behind Andrews, coming home 32nd in 11.50s. Junior
Kevin Grimshaw led Averett's men in the 400m run, completing his lap in 53.94s to finish in 19th-place. Junior
Jay Davis followed close behind to finish 24th with a time of 55.06s. A pair of sophomore ran in the men's 800m for the Cougars, as
Azael Quintero and
Darius Eubanks represented Averett. Quintero placed 44th and Eubanks finished 57th, with times of 2:06.93 and 2:17.75 respectively. Andrews once again led Averett, this time in the men's 200m sprint. Senior
Christopher Brown rounded out the top two in the event for Averett, placing 39th with a dash of 23.87s.
While experience paced the men's team, it was youth leading the way for the women's squad. Sophomores
Hailey Juhasz and
Leah Brethren brought home the Cougars top two finishes in the women's 100m dash. Juhasz led with a time of 12.94s and a 14th-place result, while Brethren trailed in 32nd with a 13.76s sprint. Juhasz earned a 15th-place finish in the women's 400m event, running to a time of 1:04.47, and also led the Cougars in the women's 200m sprint with a time of 26.84s. Saida Bangura took joe 29th-place in the event with a time of 28.88s.
Leaving the track and focusing on field events, the Cougars' men held the solo spotlight. In the men's long jump it would be Davis earning the best finish. Davis out jumped Andrews to place 18th while Andrews came away 20th with distances of 5.82m and 5.80m respectively. Junior
Chris Nelson placed 11th in the men's triple jump with a solid 12.77m leap. Junior
Carter Erickson represented Averett in both the shot put and discus events. Erickson placed 10th in shot put, posting a throw of 10.50m, and 15th in discus with a 30.92m toss.
After a busy opening weekend of action Averett is going to regroup and recover before heading to the Eastern Mennonite University Pre-ODAC Meet on Friday, April 11.
