DANVILLE, Va. — Averett University women's lacrosse hosted Sweet Briar College for a conference match on Saturday, where they won 20-3.
Before the game, Averett celebrated seven seniors graduating this spring: senior Faith Bowlin, senior Porsha Davis, senior Sheyla Romero, junior Lisanne Guiaux, senior Candace Johnson, junior Caitlin Alperstein and senior Celia de Diego.
The Cougars (2-2, 1-2 ODAC) took an early lead against Sweet Briar (0-6, 0-3) when Bowlin scored the Cougars' first goal less than a minute into the first quarter.
Junior Gianna Minafo was able to fire in her first shot of the day a little over three minutes later. Averett stayed hot from there when senior Porsha Davis put a shot into the back of the net to claim her third goal of the season.
The Cougars scored eight unanswered goals in the first period before scoring five more goals in the second period taking a 13-0 lead into halftime.
Bowlin opened up the second-half with her 16th goal of the season. The Cougars followed by scoring three more goals in the third period.
Sweet Briar was able to put three goals into the net in the fourth period, but not before Averett scored three more goals to close the match.
Junior Caitlin Alperstein earned the win in goal, stopping five shots in defense of Averett's net.
The win marks the team's first conference victory of the season.
Averett is back in action on Wednesday when they travel to Lynchburg, Virginia for a conference match against Randolph College at 7 p.m.
