Softball falls to No. 7 CNU

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — Averett University softball had its three-game win streak snapped with a pair of road losses to No. 7 Christopher Newport University on Tuesday. The Captains won 6-1 in the opener, then won 10-2 in six innings to finish the day.

In Game 1, Averett (4-4) trailed 3-0 entering the fourth inning. Senior Angela Rodriguez singled to lead off the top of the fourth, and an error on a sacrifice bunt attempt put runners on first and second. Sophomore Ally Testerman drove in Rodriguez with an RBI fielder's choice to cut the Captains' lead to 3-1.

CNU (8-0) extended its lead in the fifth with back-to-back RBI doubles before adding another insurance run in the sixth.
Averett had six hits in the opener, including two by Rodriguez.

In the second game of the day, CNU built a 4-0 lead in the first inning, but Averett countered with a run in the second inning when sophomore Kadence Woodlief scored on an error. The Cougars trimmed their deficit to 4-2 in the fourth with Testerman's RBI double down the right field line.

The Captains pulled away in the fifth, getting an RBI double and RBI single before knocking a three-run homer. All five runs were unearned in that frame. CNU added another run in the sixth to end the game early.

Averett finished with six hits, including two apiece by Testerman and freshman Adrianna Winters.

Averett is scheduled to host Salem College on Thursday at 1 p.m. in a rescheduled doubleheader from Feb. 16.
