DANVILLE, Va. – Averett University men's lacrosse held strong through two quarters, but fell in the second half to lose 17-2 versus Marietta College on Saturday afternoon at Daly Field at Frank R. Campbell Stadium.
Defenses were locked in for the first period, but Marietta (5-1) was the first squad to break through, with Aiden Evans getting the game's first score just over a minute in. The Patriots did have their chances, but Averett (2-6) managed to cause nine turnovers alone within 15 minutes, a season-high for the Cougars.
Marietta doubled its lead early into the second, but tides began to switch slightly in the home sides' favor.
Tigran Ceesay had his fingerprints over Averett's two goals to tie the contest up, first assisting
Emmett Wood, and then managing his own score with the offense a man up. It would be short-lived, as the Patriots netted a pair, and stopped any Cougar chances to keep its 4-2 lead intact approaching the halftime break.
Marietta's momentum propelled them to the tune of seven goals in the third period, which helped the Patriots to eventually secure the 17-2 win by games' end.
Ceesay and Wood tallied a goal each. Wood led in total ground balls with five, and six Cougars contributed caused turnovers.
Robbie Isenhour saved 14 shots on the afternoon.
Averett returns to action at Daly Field on Thursday, March 13, hosting Husson University for a 1 p.m. start.
