DANVILLE, Va. — Averett University women's lacrosse hosted Warren Wilson for their first game of the season, where the Cougars defeated the Owls 21-8 on Saturday.
Averett (1-0, 0-0 ODAC) took an early lead against Warren Wilson (3-4, 0-0 C2C) when senior
Faith Bowlin scored the Cougars' first goal less than a minute into the first quarter. Bowlin's goal set the Cougars on a roll, as the senior scorer piled on her second of the game just over two minutes later. Averett stayed hot from there when sophomore
Cayden Holdsworth fired her opening goal of the 2025 season. The trend of Bowlin and Holdsworth leading the Cougars' attack would not stop at any point in the game. Bowlin scored nine goals, while Holdsworth had eight. Senior
Porsha Davis and junior
Gianna Minafo added goals to the Cougars' tally in the first half. At the end of the first 30 minutes of play, Averett held a 13-4 lead over Warren Wilson.
Freshman
Andraya Bates broke the ice in the second half with her first career goal. The dynamic duo of Bowlin and Holdsworth combined for the Cougars' next four goals before the Owls' attack finally responded. Averett held a commanding lead going into the fourth quarter where Holdsworth added on to her career day, slamming the door shut with four more goals. Warren Wilson responded with two scores in the waning moments as the final whistle sounded with Averett ahead 21-8.
The win for Averett marks not only the season's first triumph, but the first in the career of first-year head coach
Hannah Mae Ayers.
Bowlin and Davis, the team's veteran leaders, set their teammates up for success throughout the day with four assists each. Sophomore
Caitlin Alperstein earned the win in goal, stopping 12 shots in defense of Averett's net.
The Cougars are back in action on next Saturday, March 15, when they travel to Salem, Virginia for a conference matchup against No. 12 Roanoke College at 12 p.m.
