BRIDGEWATER, Va.— Averett University softball lost a pair of Old Dominion Athletic Conference games at Bridgewater College, falling 8-0 in five innings before losing 3-2 in Game 2 on Saturday to finish the regular season.
After falling in Game 1, Averett (17-23, 8-14 ODAC) jumped out to a 2-0 lead in Game 2. In the top of the first inning, sophomore
Kadence Woodlief's two-run single up the middle. The Cougars' lead held until the third, when Bridgewater (28-12, 18-4 ODAC) got within 2-1 on an RBI infield single, then tied it moments later with a sacrifice fly in foul territory.
Bridgewater got what turned out to be the game-winning running in the sixth with an RBI double to center field as the Eagles took a 3-2 advantage.
Sophomore
Mackenzie Newcomb had two of Averett's six hits in Game 2.
Bridgewater put together several big innings in Game 1, scoring four runs in the third and three runs in the fourth before tacking on another insurance run in the fifth to help end the game early. The Eagles limited Averett to one hit in the opener.
