HARRISONBURG, Va. – Averett University track and field earned an individual Old Dominion Athletic Conference Championship on Day 2 of action.
Sophomore
Carlota Gonzalez topped the podium in women's javelin to take home first-place for the Cougars. A native of Tarragona, Spain, Gonzalez earned the top spot with a final throw of 37.67m, landing over a meter clear of the second-place finisher. With her victory, Gonzalez becomes Averett's third all-ODAC first team honoree in program history, and first ever for the women's program. Gonzalez's performance also sees her closing in on national championship qualification, sitting just eight spots shy of the top-50 mark.
While Gonzalez stole the show by taking first-place, many other Cougars' competitors turned in solid performances. Rounding out the day of action in field events, freshman
Damien Patrick earned a top-10 finish in the men's javelin. Patrick posted a throw of 38.87m to place 10th in the event. In men's discus, junior
Carter Erickson finished 19th with a throw of 29.79m.
In the day's track events, the Cougars fielded a busy day for both the men's and women's squads. On the women's side, the day kicked off with the 4x100 relay. The team of senior
Saida Bangura, junior
Cassidy Lewis, and sophomores
Leah Brethren and
Hailey Juhasz, ran to an eighth-place finish with a time of 52.82s. The women's 1500m kicked off next, with sophomore
Gabrielle Griffin representing the Cougars. Griffin crossed the line in 19th, finishing with a time of 5:22.08. Juhasz and Griffin traded the spotlight in the day's final two events, with Juhasz running in the 200m and Griffin in the women's 5k. Juhasz placed 12th thanks to a dash of 27.16s, while Griffin also placed 12th after a performance of 19:49.30.
On the men's side, sophomore
Azael Quintero kicked the day off in the men's 800m. Quintero led off with a 17th-place finish for Averett, posting a time of 2:04.36. Senior
Nick Andrews followed in the men's 200m dash, scoring a 16th-place result and a time of 22.99s. Freshman
Hunter Moss represented the Cougars in the men's 5k, turning in a time of 16:36.41 to place 20th. Averett's men's 4x400 relay team polished off the day's action on track with a 9th-place finish courtesy of junior

The ODAC Outdoor Championships close with the Cougars adding to their program championship tally. Averett turns its attention to the upcoming Liberty University Twilight Qualifier, scheduled for Tuesday, May 6.
