DANVILLE, Va. — Averett University softball celebrated Senior Day with a 3-0 shutout over University of Lynchburg in Game 1 of its Old Dominion Athletic Conference doubleheader on Saturday at Cougar Field. Lynchburg, however, bounced back to take the second game 6-1 to earn the split.

Junior right-hander
Hannah Zabik limited Lynchburg (14-10, 5-5 ODAC) to only three hits in a complete-game shutout victory in Game 1.
Averett (12-16, 3-7 ODAC) broke a scoreless tie in the fourth on sophomore
Kadence Woodlief's RBI single to center field, scoring sophomore
Carson Bradsher. Up 1-0, the Cougars added insurance runs in the fifth on Bradsher's RBI single down the left field line and Zabik's infield single to third base to extend the lead to 3-0.
Bradsher accounted for two of Averett's six hits and two of Averett's three runs in the first game of the afternoon.
In Game 2, Averett jumped ahead 1-0 in the first inning thanks to sophomore
Mackenzie Newcomb's RBI sacrifice fly to center, scoring Bradsher. Yet, Lynchburg got its first timely hit of the day in the top of the second with a game-tying RBI single to center.
Tied 1-1, Lynchburg's offense broke through for four runs in the fourth inning to surge to a 5-1 advantage. The Hornets added another run in the sixth.
Averett had six hits — three by Bradsher and two by freshman
Brianna Brooks — but left seven on base after not getting a needed timely hit when the Cougars had opportunities to chip away at Lynchburg's lead.
Prior to the game, Averett honored its two seniors
Angela Rodriguez and
Hannah Jones.
The Cougars are scheduled to host Roanoke College on Tuesday.
