SALEM, Va. — Averett University baseball earned sweet revenge on Roanoke College to draw even in the season series.
Averett (16-9, 8-6 ODAC) and Roanoke (17-12-1, 9-4-1 ODAC) met for the second time in 2025 and the road team earned the win once again. The Cougars dispatched the Maroons by a score of 13-4.
Averett started off scorching hot, just as the team had in the first meeting against Roanoke. The Cougars opened up a 9-0 lead before the Maroons were able to plate their first run of the game. Averett broke the ice with ball put in play by junior
J.C. Barry, and scored a run thanks to a fielding mishap by Roanoke. The game really opened up for Averett in the fourth inning. Senior
Preston Robbins led things off with a single, and Barry followed suit with one of his own. Another error from Roanoke allowed Averett to score its second run. The Cougars pieced together a string of hits to put runners in scoring position for senior
Mason Williams. Williams singled down the right field line to score two Cougars, extending the lead out to 5-0 after four innings of play. Averett tacked on two more in the fifth with some power swinging from the heart of the lineup. Redshirt sophomore
Trevor Testerman led off with a double into right field. Robbins singled to drive Testerman across the plate, and senior
Caden Grider did the very same to put Averett up by a touchdown and an extra point.
Pitching kept things locked down while Averett continued to tally runs. The Cougars opted for a bullpen game for the chilly midweek contest. Sophomore
Jack Turner, junior
Tim Schware, graduate student
Shane Michel, and senior
Nathan Comer all pitched in to stifle the Maroons throughout the early portion of the game. Schware earned the win thanks to his two innings of scoreless ball, while Turner impressed by striking out the side.Â
Averett's offense was not content with seven runs. Testerman added two RBIs in the sixth, to make it a 9-0 advantage for the Cougars. Roanoke answered with a smattering of runs in the late innings before Averett pulled away in the top of the ninth. The Cougars voodoo magic is in full effect of late, as once again Averett was able to bat around the lineup without a single hit recorded. Six walks and an error allowed Averett to plate four more runs in the inning, leading to the final score of 13-4.
The Cougars have now won consecutive games by the exact same scoreline, defeating Virginia Wesleyan University 13-4 in Game 2 on Saturday. It's no glitch in the matrix, Averett is pounding the ball and coming away with runs to prove it, outscoring opponents 26-8 in the last 18 innings of baseball.
Williams and Robbins paced the Cougars' lineup with three hits each. Testerman continued to deliver in the clutch with three runs knocked in, while both Williams and Robbins trailed just behind with two RBIs.
Averett has a few days off to prepare for this weekend's big test. The No. 2 University of Lynchburg is set to come to town on Saturday, April 12, for a doubleheader that gets underway at noon on the green grass of Owen-Fulton Field in Danville, Virginia.
