DANVILLE, Va. – In the home confines of Daly Field at Frank R. Campbell Stadium, Averett University men's lacrosse were unable to overcome conference foe Guilford College, losing 17-4 on Wednesday night.
Guilford (3-10, 1-5 ODAC) and Bashwyn Fitch put the visitors ahead, but not before
Emmett Wood replied back for Averett (4-9, 1-5 ODAC) with his team-leading 22nd score of the season. Davis Palombo and company replied straight back for the Quakers, with four goals netted before the period ended. The Cougars had work to do, but had limited Guilford to a few turnovers to alleviate the damage. The Quakers led 5-1, turning over the period.
The Cougars had a few chances, accumulating five shots throughout the second stanza, but were unable to capitalize on opposing netminder Darius Safavi-Abbassi. On the other hand, the visitors combined for a hat-trick to extend its advantage to seven, as the Quakers led 8-1 at the halftime break.
The two sides remained even through some play in the third. While the Quakers notched a few goals, Averett's
Tigran Ceesay caught some fire with two scores on his own, with the score knotted at 10-3. Guilford would end up controlling the rest of the contest, netting seven more to reach 17 on the night.
Faceoff specialist
Zac Coleman added a fourth for the Cougars during that stretch, but the Quakers ended up on top with the 17-4 final score.
Ceesay led the Cougars in goals with a pair.
Cory Habick assisted for the first time this season, and
Brayton Powers added one as well. Three players led the team in ground balls, with
Giovanni D'Amico,
Deven Perry, and
Casey Peterson in that respective category.
D'Amico and
Connor Boyd tallied two caused turnovers.
Robbie Isenhour finished the night with 17 saves.
Averett hits the road to play versus No. 13 University of Lynchburg on Saturday, April 12. Start time is set for 7 p.m.
