DANVILLE, Va. — Averett University's men's soccer team battled No. 6 Lynchburg but ultimately came up short, falling 5-0 Saturday afternoon.
Averett (0-13, 0-8 ODAC) held Lynchburg (11-1-4, 4-0-3 ODAC) scoreless in the first 25 minutes, and to three goals through 63 minutes before the Hornets pulled away late to secure the road win.
The Cougars relied on strong defensive and goalkeeping performances from freshman
Nicholas Dinoia, who recorded eight saves in the match.
Sophomore
Gavin Blanks recorded Averett's lone shot of the match in the first half.
Lynchburg's Chris Wiley came off the bench to score a second-half goal for the Hornets.
The loss concluded the Cougars' home schedule. A strong defensive effort kept Averett competitive early, but the Hornets ultimately proved too much to overcome.
Averett will conclude its season on the road against No. 18 Washington and Lee on Wednesday, Oct. 28, at 7:30 p.m.
