DANVILLE, Va. — Averett University baseball won one and lost one against Carolina University in Tuesday's doubleheader.
Â
Averett (3-4) dropped Game 1 to Carolina (7-6) as the Bruins took an early lead and held off Averett''s late charge to win the day's opening game.
Â
The Cougars' Game 1 was highlighted by a pair of RBIs from junior
Jack Turner, as Averett kept within striking distance for the majority of the game but never quite found a way to vault in front of Carolina en route to a 7-5 defeat.
Â
Game 2 played out much differently for Averett. The Cougars pounced on Carolina's pitching early and often. Freshman
Julian Esparza opened the scoring with a great display of two-out hitting, lacing a two-run double to the gap in left center to give Averett a 2-0 lead after two innings. The Cougars continued to swing the bat well in the third inning, scoring four runs in the frame thanks to a combination of walks, small ball, and big swings. Junior
Tyler Lowe worked a bases loaded walk, Turner knocked in a run on a fielders choice, freshman
Landon Mitchell knocked a double to left field, and sophomore
Nathan Michalowicz added a sacrifice fly as Averett jumped out to a 6-1 lead.
Â
The exclamation point of Averett's day came in the bottom of the fifth inning thanks to the bat of Lowe. The junior outfielder turned on a 1-1 pitch and swiftly deposited it over the fence in left field. Lowe's line drive blast cleared the wall easily, and helped cement the Cougars' 7-3 Game 2 victory.
Â
Freshman
Justin Godsey turned in an excellent performance on the mound for Averett. Godsey started Game 2 on the bump and tossed 4.1 innings of two-run ball while striking out four Bruins in the process. Freshman Bradyn Schultz also dazzled in his debut outing, going 1.2 innings without allowing a baserunner.
Â
Averett's short home stand is over already as the Cougars will take to the road to face Pfeiffer University over the weekend. The Cougars and Falcons have three games scheduled, starting with a doubleheader on Saturday, Feb. 28, at 1 p.m.
