RALEIGH, N.C. — Averett University softball swept a non-conference doubleheader against William Peace University on Tuesday, winning 13-3 in Game 1 and 6-2 in Game 2.
In the opener, Averett (5-1) broke things open with a big fourth inning and never looked back. The Cougars tallied 16 hits off of William Peace (0-3), led by junior Carson Bradsher's four-hit, three-run performance. Junior Mackenzie Newcomb added two hits, including a home run and three RBIs, While freshman Kennidy Kirby drove in three runs.Â
Senior Hannah Zabik went the distance in the circle, striking out five and allowing three runs to earn the win.Â
Game 2 was highlighted by a five-run third inning that gave the Cougars early control. Newcomb again paced the offense with two hits and three RBIs, while Kirby and junior Kadence Woodlief each added key RBI hits.Â
Freshman Cora Liggon pitched 6.1 strong innings, allowing just two runs and junior Kaci Stephenson closed out the final outs.Â
Averett hosts their first home doubleheader Saturday against Meredith College at 1 p.m. for Military Appreciation Day.Â
