Baseball splits road doubleheader with Washington and Lee

LEXINGTON, Va. — Averett University baseball earned a split in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference doubleheader Saturday at Washington and Lee University.

Averett (6-10, 1-3 ODAC) rallied for a 5-3 win in Game 2 after dropping the opener 8-6 at Washington and Lee's (8-6-1, 3-3-1 ODAC) Cap'n Dick Smith Field.

Washington and Lee took the first game by building an early cushion with two runs in the second inning and four more in the third. Averett answered with two runs in the fourth on a sacrifice fly by freshman Landon Mitchell and an RBI single from sophomore Nathan Michalowicz, but the Generals added single runs in the sixth and eighth to stay in front. The Cougars made one final push in the ninth when junior Maddox Jordan lined a three-run double to left field, trimming the deficit to two, but Washington and Lee held on for the 8-6 win.

Junior Drew Skinner and Michalowicz led Averett in the opener with two hits apiece, while Jordan drove in a team-high three runs. Skinner also scored once, and freshman Daniel Powell Jr. came off the bench with a hit and a run scored.

The Cougars bounced back in the second game by scoring in each of the final five innings. Jordan put Averett on the board with an RBI double in the fifth, junior Tyler Lowe added a run-scoring double in the sixth, and senior Austin Ford tied the game with a sacrifice fly in the seventh. Averett then moved in front for good in the eighth on senior Ryan Toney's sacrifice fly before adding an insurance run in the ninth on another sacrifice fly from Lowe.

Toney sparked the Averett offense in Game 2, going 3-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI. Ford and senior Luke Keister added two hits each, while Lowe drove in two runs and Jordan also had an RBI. Averett finished with 10 hits in the win after holding Washington and Lee scoreless over the final four innings.

On the mound, sophomore Ean Amerson gave Averett 4.2 innings in the start, allowing three runs, two earned, before junior Joshua Gunn shut the door with 4.1 scoreless innings of relief to earn the win. Gunn allowed just two hits as the Cougars closed the day by handing Washington and Lee the Game 2 loss.

Across the two games, Jordan led Averett with four RBIs, while Skinner, Ford, Keister, Michalowicz and Toney all had multiple hits during the two-game set.

Averett baseball is back in action to take on Guilford College on Wednesday, March 18 at 3 p.m. on home turf.
