Women’s tennis defeats Virginia Wesleyan on the road

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – Averett University women's tennis earned a valuable 4-3 win at Virginia Wesleyan University on Saturday afternoon.

As Averett (3-2, 2-1 ODAC) dropped the first doubles match early, the Cougars bounced back with wins at the second and third spots to clutch the first overall point. Annika Kellerer and Ella Boddington confirmed such a result with a 6-2 win versus Jette Hafermann and Lexi Hackbirth of Virginia Wesleyan (1-5, 0-2 ODAC).

Averett took its next win at No. 1 in singles from Dilara Sultanova with a 7-5, 6-3 win versus Tuva Flink. Siddhi Khot went next in the winner's circle, defeating Meena Lennon 6-4, 6-4. Harshri Asher clutched the fourth and elusive point that the visitors needed to lock up the conference victory, by taking out Hafermann in three sets, 6-3, 4-6, 6-2.

The Marlins would end up taking the three remaining singles matches, but the Cougars had things in hand.

Averett looks for its second straight conference win tomorrow afternoon at home versus the University of Lynchburg at 1 p.m.
