WINCHESTER, Va. — Averett University baseball dropped both legs of a Saturday afternoon doubleheader against No. 7 Shenandoah University.
Shenandoah (18-3, 5-3 ODAC) broke the game open early, scoring 14 runs in the first inning and adding four more in the second to build a commanding lead. The Hornets finished with 23 runs on 22 hits.
Averett (6-13, 1-6 ODAC) got on the board in the second inning when junior
Maddox Jordan doubled home senior
Connor Kubis. The Cougars added three more runs in the fifth, highlighted by an RBI single from freshman
Daniel Powell Jr. and a run-scoring play from junior
Tyler Lowe.
Jordan and Powell Jr. each drove in a run to lead Averett in Game 1, while Lowe, sophomore
Nathan Michalowicz, and senior
Luke Keister each recorded a hit as part of the Cougars' six-hit effort.
The Cougars struck first in Game 2 with two runs in the opening inning on an RBI groundout from Lowe and an RBI single by Michalowicz. Shenandoah answered with three runs in the second and added single runs in the third and fourth innings to take a 5-2 lead.
Averett cut into the deficit in the sixth inning as Jordan and Keister each delivered RBI singles to make it 5-4. Shenandoah responded with three runs in the bottom half of the inning to extend its lead to 8-4.
The Cougars added a run in the eighth on a wild pitch but could not complete the comeback.
Keister led Averett with two hits and an RBI, while Kubis and senior
Austin Ford each recorded two hits. Jordan and Michalowicz also drove in runs for the Cougars.
Averett baseball is back on the diamond on Tuesday, March 24, at 2 p.m. as the Cougars travel to face No. 24 Roanoke College.
