Baseball wins Monday matchup with Regent

DANVILLE, Va. — Averett University baseball defeated Regent University in a Monday standalone contest.

Averett (9-14, 3-7 ODAC) took care of business against the visiting Regent (13-12) side with a decisive 7-1 victory.

While Averett dominated the game, it was actually Regent that opened up an early lead. The Royals put up their lone run of the contest in the top of the first inning before Averett rattled off seven unanswered, starting in the bottom of the second inning.

In the bottom of the second freshman Landon Mitchell broke the ice for the Cougars. Mitchell opened the scoring with a single through the right side of the Royals' infield that tied the game at 1-1. Averett's offense continued to click in its next trip to the plate, as junior Tyler Lowe knocked in a run with an RBI single before coming around to score on a passed ball. After three innings, Averett held a 3-1 advantage.

The Cougars scratched a couple more runs on the board throughout the middle innings of the ballgame before landing a closing blow in the bottom of the eighth inning. Senior Ryan Toney led the inning off with a base knock to set the table for a big swing from Mitchell, who delivered emphatically with a two-run big fly over the left field fence at Owen-Fulton Field. Mitchell's first career long ball vaulted
Averett out to a 7-1 lead that would be no problem for the pitching staff to hold on to.

The Cougars' arms on the mound were lights out from start to finish. Freshman Carter Hine started the game and went 3.2 strong innings, allowing one run but holding Regent to just three hits. Sophomore Preston Corbitt earned the win with 2.2 innings pitched in relief, in which the lefty held the Royals scoreless while tallying two strikeouts. Freshman Jason Perkins closed the door on Regent and wrapped up Averett's Monday triumph with 2.2 innings on the mound in which the Royals could only tally one hit.

A trio of Cougars combined to lead the team in hits: Mitchell, Lowe, and senior Austin Ford each amassed two hits on the day. Mitchell paced Averett with three RBIs, aided in a big way by his two-run shot. Averett excelled on the base paths as well, as five different Cougars swiped a bag, with Ford alone stealing three bases.

Averett baseball's busy week continues on Wednesday as Chowan University comes to town for a 3 p.m. clash with the Cougars.
