Men’s lacrosse defeated by Methodist in Wendell Scott game

DANVILLE, Va. – Averett University men's lacrosse was right in the thick of competition versus visiting Methodist University on Wednesday night, but saw a fourth quarter barrage from the visitors put the Cougars away, 18-6.

Jay Legg got the game started for Methodist (2-4), before senior Emmett Wood replied for Averett (0-5) from a man-up opportunity to tie the game up. Towards the end of the quarter, déjà vu came to fruition as the same two scorers netted goals once more, first Legg, then Wood. A competitive first period ended tied at two between the two teams.

The Monarchs entered the next period and took off with two quick scores in the first three minutes. First-year player Gavin Dean then got on the scoreboard with help from Wood, as he made it onto the scoresheet for the first time in his career. Celebrations were short-lived, however, with Nick Garza on the board just seven seconds after to put Methodist back up by two, 5-3.

The Monarchs scored their sixth not long after, until Gabe Gallegos put some life back into the home team with his fifth score of the campaign. Momentum seemed to be the way of the Cougars, but not until Legg scored yet again, and the visitors' seventh before the halftime horn.

Connor Boyd and Methodist's J.R. Newman traded netters early in the third, with Averett on the trail, 8-5. In the game's lowest scoring quarter since the first, the next scores did not occur until under two to go, with Boyd repeating his efforts for his second goal of the game, and the score cut back down to two at 8-6. The Monarchs got a late push and score with just over 30 seconds left for their ninth.

The contest drifted away from Averett in the fourth; nine goals from the opposition sealed things for Methodist and its win.

Wood led the team in points with three, and two scores. Four different Cougars each had two ground balls on the night. Isenhour performed bravely in net with 15 saves.

Averett continues its long March homestand with a home bout against Hiram College next on Sunday, March 8. First faceoff is set for 2 p.m.
