Pfeiffer sweeps Averett in non-conference doubleheader

MISENHEIMER, N.C. — Averett University softball dropped both games of a non-conference doubleheader to Pfeiffer University on Tuesday, falling 11-3 in five innings in the opener before losing 6-1 in the second game.

In Game 1, Averett (7-3) took an early lead in the first inning over Pfeiffer (3-3). Junior Carson Bradsher led off with a single and later scored when junior Mackenzie Newcomb hit an RBI single to right field. The Cougars scored two runs in the top of the fifth inning when junior Kadence Woodlief drove in a run with a single and sophomore Brianna Brooks added another RBI single.

Averett finished Game 1 with eight hits. Woodlief lead the team with two hits, while Bradsher scored twice.

In Game 2, the Falcons again took control early. The Cougars were held scoreless through the first five innings but got on the board in the sixth. Freshman Kennidy Kirby singled, stole second base and later scored on a groundout by Woodlief to make it 4-1. Pfeiffer answered in the bottom of the sixth with a two-run home run to push the lead 6-1.

The Cougars recorded six hits in the game. Senior Kailey Gates had two hits, including a double, and Bradsher also finished with two hits. Freshman Delani Straughan started in the circle for Averett and took the loss, while senior Sarah Lysohir pitched four innings in relief.

Averett travels to Raleigh, North Carolina on Saturday to compete at Day 1 of the Grand Slam Triangle Softball Classic, where they will face the University of Mary Washington and Greensboro College beginning at 1:30 p.m.
