GREENSBORO, N.C. – Averett University women's tennis dispatched Guilford College, 6-1 for its opening ODAC victory at the Piedmont Indoor Tennis Center on Sunday afternoon.
Averett (2-1, 1-0 ODAC) lost the first doubles match, but reversed its fortunes by taking No. 2 and 3 doubles to win the first point. Capped off by a 6-3 win from
Annika Kellerer and
Ella Boddington, the Cougars looked poised with an early lead.
Guilford (3-3, 0-1 ODAC) won at the top singles spot, but it was all Cougars from then on. From the number two through six rubbers, Averett won each of them.
Sunna Maass, Kellerer,
Siddhi Khot, and
Harshri Asher all won in straight sets convincingly.
Brenda Poulakidas had the sternest test of the bunch, as she went neck-and-neck with the Quakers' Ashley Belnap. They split the first two sets before Poulakidas won 10-7 in the penultimate super-tiebreak.
Averett faces off with last year's ODAC champions in T-No. 15 Washington and Lee University on Thursday, March 12 in its home opener next. Start time is set for 4 p.m.
