Box Score 2 ASHLAND, Va. — Averett University softball dropped both games of an ODAC doubleheader against Randolph-Macon College on Sunday, falling 8-0 in five innings in Game 1 and 6-1 in Game 2.
In the opener, Averett (19-13, 4-8Â ODAC) battled but couldn't find its rhythm offensively, as the Cougars were held hitless in the contest. Averett managed just one baserunner on a walk from junior Kadence Woodlief, while the lineup continued to put the ball in play but was unable to break through against Randolph-Macon's (19-13, 6-6) pitching.
In the circle, senior Hannah Zabik got the start and worked through early pressure, allowing just two runs over the first two innings before the Yellow Jackets extended their lead with a four-run third inning. Freshman Cora Liggon came on in relief and recorded five outs, continuing to battle and limit further damage late in the game.
In Game 2, Averett showed more life offensively, recording five hits. Woodlief went 2-for-3 at the plate, while freshman Kennidy Kirby drove in the Cougars' lone run in the fifth inning to tie the game at 1-1. Randolph-Macon responded with a decisive five-run fifth inning to pull away.Â
Junior Kaci Stephenson took the loss in the circle for Averett in Game 2, allowing five runs (four earned) over 4.2 innings.
The Cougars are back home on Wednesday when they host Guilford College for a conference doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
