WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – Averett University men's golf shot an aggregate six-under-par in the final round, the best mark of any team on Tuesday at the Sam Snead Collegiate at the Golden Horseshoe Golf Club. The Cougars rose 11 spots to claim seventh with all results final, 37-over-par 852.
Averett's dramatic rise in the ranks came through two remarkable single round performances from freshmen
Lukas Newton and
Chase Myers. Both had the third best rounds at three-under and rose thirty or more spots up the individual leaderboards as a result. By its conclusion, Newton finished 14th at six-over, following a concluding round where he totaled seven birdies.
Myers, on the other hand, had five birdies and only bogeyed twice in the third round of play, in which he finished 21st. Sophomore
Benjamin Afzelius recorded a two-under round, finishing 45th, and eagled in that stretch.
Freshman Nicholas Santoso had a two-over round with two birdies, finished 55th with a collective 14-over score. Sophomore
Zach Alway shot eight-over and finished with a plus-24 score.
Carnegie Mellon University, ranked second nationally in Division III, won the tournament at two-over-par, and David Zhang for the winning school won with a nine-under score.
Regular season play has concluded for Averett, as the team sets their sights on the ODAC championships from Apr. 19-21 at Poplar Grove Country Club in Bedford, Virginia.
