Amerson dazzles as baseball downs Virginia Wesleyan

DANVILLE, Va. — Averett University baseball hung another W in the win column in a Friday afternoon victory over Virginia Wesleyan University.

Averett (11-14, 4-7 ODAC) took down Virginia Wesleyan (12-12, 3-6 ODAC) thanks in large part to a gem on the mound from sophomore Ean Amerson, who earned the win in Friday's 7-1 Cougars triumph.

Amerson took the mound to start the game for Averett and worked eight strong innings to help lead the Cougars to the win. Amerson fired well over 100 pitches in the game, striking out three Marlins, while limiting the visiting side to just one run on the board.

While Amerson hurled a gem the Averett bats stuck to a recent trend of hanging exactly seven runs on the opposing side. Each of Averett's four wins in the team's current streak has seen the Cougars score seven, including three consecutive 7-1 final scores.

The first of Averett's seven runs today came well into the game, as the Cougars waited until the bottom of the fifth inning to pounce on the Marlins. Junior Maddox Jordan drove in the first run of the game for Averett, a double down the left field line that scored freshman Landon Mitchell to knot the game at 1-1. Jordan's RBI-double started a string of seven unanswered runs for Averett.

The Cougars struck for two more scores in the bottom of the sixth inning. Junior Drew Skinner led off with a double that rattled off the left field wall, and junior Joshua Gunn smacked a two-out two-RBI single through the middle of the infield to put Averett ahead, 3-1.

Sophomore Austin Ford added to his team-high RBI total with a base knock to score senior Luke Keister in the seventh before Averett pulled away in the bottom of the eighth. Gunn, Mitchell, and Skinner all earned a walk to first base the hard way as each player reached on a hit by pitch. An error from Virginia Wesleyan allowed one run to score, Keister recorded an RBI on a sacrifice fly, and Ford plated a run on a fielder's choice to extend Averett's advantage to 7-1.

Junior Will Green II came out from the Cougars' bullpen to close out the game in the ninth inning and slammed the door shut emphatically with a strikeout to end the ballgame.

Jordan led Averett with two hits, while Ford and Gunn each led the charge with two RBIs.

Averett turns right back around to square off with Virginia Wesleyan again on Saturday at 12:30 p.m., as the Cougars will celebrate six seniors prior to first pitch.
