SALEM, Va. – Needing to win two straight in the pod two finals, Averett University softball was eliminated from postseason play with a 6-2 loss to Bridgewater College on Sunday afternoon at Moyer Softball Complex.
Bridgewater (29-14) jumped in front first in the third inning with a double and sacrifice fly that scored two total runs. Averett (26-18) took a run back with an RBI double from sophomore catcher
Brianna Brooks in the top frame of the fourth.Â
The Eagles scored four unanswered across the next two frames to extend their lead to five, leaving Averett with three more outs to generate a rally in the top of the seventh inning. Freshman
Kennidy Kirby batted in senior
Sarah Lysohir with a single to center field, but it was all the designated team could muster up.Â
Junior
Kadence Woodlief and her hot bat kept going with a team-high two hits, one of which was a double. Brooks, Lysohir, and senior
Kailey Gates also hit two-baggers.Â
Averett trailed Bridgewater by a single hit, 8-7; but lead in doubles 4-3. With this exit, it marks the furthest that the softball team has advanced in the ODAC tournament since the school joined the conference in 2022.Â
The Cougars' 26 wins are the most since the 2019 season, and highest tally under head coach
Anna Coleman.Â
