SWEET BRIAR, Va. – Averett University women's volleyball got off the mark on Tuesday night with a opening conference sweep at Sweet Briar University on Tuesday night.
Averett (1-5, 1-0 ODAC) hit at a blistering .688 pace in the first set to a 25-8 set win. Despite only 16 attacks, the Cougars tallied 11 kills to their most dominate set win of 2026 thus far.
Sweet Briar (0-7, 0-1 ODAC) kept the tides close in the second; and tied at 9-9, Averett went on a 11-1 win six service aces and two kills from sophomore setter/right side
Alyssa Hatcher. The Cougars closed out the set with a mix of service and attack errors from the Vixens, and commanded a 2-0 set lead.
Much went the same in the third for the visitors; a 10-5 start buoyed into an 18-9 lead in the blink of an eye. To the tune of a .308 hitting percentage, 12 kills, and eight consecutive points towards the end of the match, Averett completed a resounding win to close out the victory.
Senior outside hitter
Sydney Mounce hit a season-best .421 with 11 kills on 19 attacks, as she commandeered the Cougar offense. Three other Cougars recorded four kills at a .300 hitting clip or better, led by sophomore outside hitter/right side
Sydney Carbone and her four kills on just five attack attempts.
Junior defensive specialist
Alexa Martin led the way in digs with six, and had four service aces. Carbone and senior middle hitter
Allie Lane got notched two block assists on the night. Junior setter
Megan Litman went for 14 assists.
Overall, Averett won 53 of a total 64 points, led in kills 33-6, and totaled 19 aces as a team with 31 assists.
The Cougars return right back home to the Grant Center next Wednesday, Sept. 23 for a showdown with the University of Lynchburg, receiving votes in the American Volleyball Coaches' Association (AVCA) poll. Start time is set for 6 p.m.
