DANVILLE, Va. – Averett University women's volleyball finished the 32nd Annual Cougar Classic weekend with a pair of defeats to Salem College and Greensboro College on Saturday afternoon at E. Stuart James Grant Center.
Averett (0-3) matched up with Salem (2-1) in the morning session, and were swept. The Spirits controlled the first two sets, but the Cougars fought hard in the third. Despite 11 kills as a squad, Salem remained unnerved, and closed out the match 25-21.

Sydney Mounce tallied 12 kills for Averett, and contributed two total blocks. Senior outside hitter

Hannah Batista went over 10-plus assists for the second straight match with 12, and aced thrice. Sophomore setter/right side
Laney Beaver had 11 digs and eight assists.
In the afternoon edition, Averett squared off with Greensboro (3-1). The Pride had the Cougars' number through two sets, before .379 hitting period in the third set from the home that catapulted them to the stanza win. Averett overcame a late surge from Greensboro to take it, 25-20.
The momentum carried into the fourth, where the Cougars hung close, and recorded 11 kills throughout. However, the Pride pulled away in the later stages of the set, and took it 25-21 to finish off the 3-1 win, despite a .379 hitting clip from Averett.
Mounce racked up more kills, with 16 in the afternoon contest. Villines provided pristine serving to the tune of seven service aces, while senior middle hitter
Allie Lane had six kills and three blocks. Sophomore setter/right side
Alyssa Hatcher and Beaver each had 13 assists.
Averett continues its opening home slate, hosting N.C. Wesleyan University on Tuesday, Sept. 8 at the Grant Center. Start time is set for 6 p.m.
