BURLINGTON, N.C. — Jesse Fuller’s RBI single in the 11th inning was the difference in sixth-seeded Ferrum College’s 2-1 victory over No. 3 Christopher Newport University in the first round of the USA South Conference Tournament on Thursday at Burlington Athletic Stadium.

Ferrum (13-13) benefitted from a one-out walk in the top of the 11th. Paul Jaglowski followed with a single through the right side, moving Jason Parker to second base. Fuller then broke the 1-1 tie with a hit deep into the right-field corner that scored Parker from second.

Panthers reliever Dennis Cauley got Christopher Newport (19-8-1) to go in order in the bottom half of the inning to give Ferrum the upset.

Ferrum advances to play the winner of No. 7 Averett/No. 2 Methodist at 9 a.m. on Friday. Christopher Newport will play the loser of Averett/Methodist at 9:30 a.m. on Friday at Elon University.

Christopher Newport led 1-0 through five innings after Ben Lenda plated Mike Romett on a single to center field.

Ferrum tied the game in the seventh inning when Travis Crump scored ahead of an unconventional 3-6-3 double play.

Cauley earned the win in relief of Jon Wilson. Captains reliever Mike Giarizzi took the loss.
