Gavin Birkhimer joined the Averett University baseball program as an assistant coach in July 2023.
Birkhimer came to Averett following a three-year playing career at NCAA Division II University of Virginia’s College at Wise, where he played 55 games over three seasons as an outfielder. Prior to playing for the Cavaliers, Birkhimer began his collegiate career at Surry Community College and batted .435 in 15 games as a freshman.
Off the field, Birkhimer worked within U.Va.-Wise's Department of Athletics as a facility management assistant and also was a baseball umpire for Wise Little League.
Birkhimer gained coaching experience by helping guide the Pineville Porcupines to the 2023 Old North State League championship.
A native of Pineville, North Carolina, Birkhimer earned his bachelor's degree in sport management from U.Va.-Wise in June 2023. He is pursuing his master's degree from Averett.
