Colten Newsom joined the Averett University football staff in March of 2026.
A former versatile D1-level athlete, Newsom last played at North Carolina Wesleyan University, appearing in the first four games before medically retiring due to Chiari malformation. Before his time with the Battling Bishops, Newsom was at St. Andrews University. Newsom first committed to Division-II The University of Texas Permian Basin, a powerhouse football program, before transferring to St. Andrews.Â
A standout star at Midland Christian School in Midland, Texas, Newsom earned multiple accolades during the 2023 season, including TAPPS State Athlete of the Year, First Team All-District, Team MVP, Team Captain, and MRT All-Star First Team Quarterback, while also being named Second Team All-District at defensive back.
